Forklift Battery Safety
The large industrial sized batteries used to run electric lift trucks should be charged regularly and properly maintained. Safety measures must always be followed while somebody connects the battery to the charger. It is really vital to inspect battery fluid levels.
PPE - Personal Protective Equipment
It is important for workers working with a forklift battery to wear eye protection. Other PPG comprise goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The best way to protect both skin and clothes from other residue or leaked acid is to wear an approved apron on the body and thick rubber gloves on the hands.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Next to the charging place should be an emergency eyewash post. The route to the station should not be obstructed and a worker who is injured must be able to reach the eyewash post from the charging place within 10 seconds while walking.
Charger Safety
The battery and charger must be at the same amperage. It must be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open fire are prohibited in the vicinity of a battery and charging area. Never permit objects such as lighters or matches to be used while someone is inspecting the battery fluid levels.
Ventilation
It is important to keep the battery charging area correctly ventilated. The recharging process can release gas. These gases are both poisonous and explosive.
